Sculpture Painting 6 - Damascene Flute
This sculpture painting is the culmination of over a year's work based on the Cantigas de Santa María in the Libro de la Música. The shape is flute-like but is also a calligraphic swirl; the shadows it casts on the gold leaf background is an important part of the composition. The flute has calligraphic fragments and ancient notation painted on it, from one of the Cantigas. The black and gold is a reference to the Damascene technique, made famous in Toledo from medieval times and the centre of the royal court of ALfonso X, where the Libro de la Música was created.
