Sculpture painting 2 - Loor de Santa Maria
Inspired by a Loor in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, from Alfonso X’s Libro de la música. Loor means praise, and in the Cantigas are poems set to music, revering the saint or telling the story of a miracle performed due to her intervention.
The painting combines references to music both in the form, the three-dimensional flutes, and the visual content. Ancient music notation inspired the black rectangles and diamond shapes to create a background pattern, and the Romanic columns and ornament represent musical notes as in previous paintings. The nude figures play ancient instruments, listening to each other and developing their interpretation of the music. The painting is mounted onto a convex backing board. |
