Sculpture Painting 1 - Muslim and Christian playing ancient lutes
I was looking for a way to link painting with music, and had the idea (while at a concert) to form the paper into flute-like shapes. After cutting up a painting and making the flutes, I sewed bells on the bottom edges. The flutes twist allowing the bells to lightly chime.
This double painting uses the same composition for both the hanging flutes and the painting mounted behind, however using a different colour range in each. The sculpture painting is inspired by an image from the Cantigas de Santa Maria, from Alfonso X’s Libro de la Música. The creation of the painting coincided with the inauguration of President Obama on January 20th, and the full solar eclipse by the moon on January 26th 2009, and these facts together with an extract from his speech (referring to a new era of understanding and co-operation between all nations) contribute to the composition, with the two musicians forming the centre of interest. The speech extract is written in a circle and forms the boundary of the solar eclipse’s radiated light. The flutes create a direct link to the musical theme through their form, and because they are hung they can twist, tinkling the tiny bells. The flutes and painting are mounted on a convex backing adding to the three dimensional effect. |
