Artist Statement
As an artist who revels in transparent and vivid color, and who loves craftsmanship, watercolor and stained glass are the most natural mediums to work in for me.
My paintings since 2009 have been inspired by the miniatures, texts and musical scores found in the Libro de la Música, which contains the Cantigas de Santa Maria. These already ancient cantigas were recorded for posterity by Alphonso X and his court in the 12th century, immortalizing the songs and poems sung by troubadours and pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
I started working with stained glass in 1976, after being inspired by an exhibition of contemporary stained glass work in London. The medieval background to stained glass and the natural materials-hand made glass, lead cames, grisaille and silver stain- fascinated me as did the modern approach to design within this framework.
I have designed and made stained glass projects for a diverse range of locations and clients, public and private. My design process relies on thoughtful communication between all involved in the project: architects, interior designers, the building’s end-users, and client.
I completed a stained glass apprenticeship from 1976-9, then worked for Goddard and Gibbs Stained Glass Studio in London between 1979 -83 as a painter and designer. In 1983 I set up a stained glass studio in Crawley, Sussex, and began working to commission for a variety of clients and locations both within and beyond Britain.
In 1994 l left England on board the 15 m. gaff ketch Tugra d’Or planning to cruise, indefinitely, and thereby to live and work in different countries. However, things don’t always go to plan, and I found myself in Barcelona in the year 2000, where I have been living and working ever since.
